When you opened your eyes, a vein in your left temple had grown an organ, a heart. It beat rhythmically, and you wondered how long before it consumed you and whether, as it did, it recognised your existence and bore you some affection.

Wow, as I manage a neurological disease of the left frontal and temporal lobes that has severe chronic migraines, seizures, aphasia, etc., as secondary effects, these words and this image are something I can really identify with.
